His work has been recognised internationally with several awards and nominations, and he has designed the lighting for productions extensively all over the globe. He was recently named Lighting Designer of the Year at the TPI Awards, as well as being the winner of both the Lighting Design Awards and The Royal Television Society Award for best Lighting Design for Multi-Camera. He is also a winner of Australia’s Helpmann Award for Best Lighting Design, and of last year’s Knight of Illumination Award, for which he is nominated again this year.

He has designed the lighting for many internationally fêted productions, including three winners of the Golden Rose of Montreux and a Grammy.
A film school graduate in the eighties, he came to lighting initially through photography, and he has taken this photographic or ‘filmic’ eye into all of his lighting work, succeeding in different genres which are often considered to require distinct and separate training, experience, and talent.
He was the original designer of ground breaking television shows such as ‘The X Factor’, and ‘Pop Idol’, and ‘TFI Friday’, and he has been designing large scale spectacular contemporary music television productions like the MTV Awards and The Brit Awards for over 10 years, as well as major touring shows like the recent Robbie Williams World Tour.
However, his versatility is reflected in productions such as the Royal Variety Show, which require the ability to analyse and reproduce the lighting from a wide variety of theatrical productions, and he is at home with the subtleties required for the lighting of classical music and opera, television drama, and commercials..
The success of his company Incandescent Design is based on its attention to detail, and a contemporary visual style. A flexible and open approach to the job, with a willingness to listen and understand, is underpinned by a solid work ethic with the ability to work under pressure.
